Indian Superfoods For Super Seniors

Any food item that is packed with many nutrients beneficial to the human body is given a new name “superfood.” These are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, etc, and low in calories too.

We are swearing by “superfoods” but honestly, it is a marketing term. Foreign foods like avocado, broccoli,  kiwi, or chia seeds are promoted as superfoods to promote their sales. Now that does not mean that our traditional  Indian food items are not so super. I shall be taking those nutritive food items which are cultivated in India and are pronounced as superfoods. Our own superfoods! Turmeric, garlic, pomegranate, millets, moringa, sweet potatoes, and so many more have made it to the list. If we closely analyze the list of superfoods, all traditional Indian foods promoted by Ayurveda have made it to this super list. 

All superfoods are not expensive or exotic.

The superfood need not be from some super location but local produce is equally good to us. I believe that the locally produced food is more suitable for our needs than the imported ones as mother nature is kind enough to bring all our needs near us. Secondly, locals can be fresh than the ones imported from distant locations. This also increases their price tag and our carbon footprints too, when we use them. When we buy local things, we are reducing our costs and also our carbon footprints.  We also contribute to the local economy thus making our own people prosper and eat fresh foods. This way, we are contributing to the environment, which needs better care for our survival.

The indigenous superfoods are easily available. Here is a list of the popular ten Indian superfoods. They all are rich in nutrients like proteins, minerals, and vitamins that must be added to daily meals. 

  1. Sabudaana 
  2. Sattu 
  3. Jackfruit
  4. Ghee
  5. Amla
  6. Jau (जौ )
  7. Ragi
  8. Daliya (Broken wheat)
  9. Curd
  10. Makhana

There are more food items like bananas, lentils, melon, sunflower, sesame seeds, turmeric, ashwagandha, ragi, cashew, almond,  and walnut too. It is a good idea to add these easily available items to our daily consumption and enjoy good health and a good life. The nutritional value is not to be judged by price. A food commodity can be costly if it is reaching us after traveling long-distance i.e not locally produced. Or is difficult to produce locally and yield is not enough.
